Our journey with the annual holiday event for kids began in 2016 at the Multnomah Library. Starting modestly, we assembled 60 gifts for children from underserved families with the aid of local partners. Each year marked our growth, expanding our partnerships with more businesses and organizations. In 2017, we moved to a larger venue to serve over 100 kids, and by 2018, we reached out to over 200 children. However, the onset of the pandemic posed new challenges. Despite these hurdles, we persisted in our mission. In 2019, though on a smaller scale, we continued to support children and their families through our partners and volunteers. The Slavic Community Center of NW provided not just presents but also food, PPE, and utility assistance to the most vulnerable families. This year, we carried on this tradition, serving over 150 kids, bringing joy and vital resources to their families.

This initiative, part of the “Gifts for Children from Low-Income Families” program by the Slavic Community Center, continued in 2023. Far from being just a day’s event, it was the result of uncountable hours of dedication and hard work by our volunteers and staff throughout December. Preparing for this event demanded immense effort as volunteers spent numerous hours meticulously selecting and wrapping each gift, ensuring each child felt special. We thoughtfully matched gifts to over 150 children’s individual needs and preferences, demonstrating our community’s commitment to profoundly impacting these young lives.

We owe immense gratitude to our sponsors, whose support was instrumental to our initiative’s success. Their contributions enhanced the festive spirit and were pivotal in bringing together various suppliers, each adding value with their support and services. This collective effort from local businesses, educational institutions, and medical organizations created a supportive and joyful environment for both children and their families.

The time spent wrapping gifts fostered a sense of community and purpose, with volunteers from diverse backgrounds sharing stories and experiences, creating bonds that extended beyond the event. This feeling of community enveloped the event, as families were immersed in an atmosphere of warmth and generosity.

The event itself was dynamic and engaging, featuring stalls and activities from our suppliers that offered more than gifts – they provided essential information and resources to assist families in various life aspects. From educational materials to healthcare information, the range of support was extensive and well-received.

The “Gifts for Children from Low-Income Families” initiative in 2023 was not just an event but a vibrant testament to community spirit, volunteerism, and generosity. It showcased how combined efforts from dedicated individuals and supportive sponsors can significantly impact those in need, especially during the festive season. This initiative brought joy to children and strengthened community bonds, leaving a lasting impression on all involved.

International Kids Festival is a celebration of different cultures that live in East county. The event will focus on children and their families and would create a platform for different communities to show their culture and heritage. SCC of NW would reach out to different communities and ask them to perform traditional songs, dances, put together performances and showcase their unique heritage. The event would also help build relationships with different communities and allow other organizations to have direct reach to underserved and underrepresented communities of color. The goal is to have an event that will be attractive to younger generations as well as to people who want to experience different cultures; try new food, listen to songs in different languages, dances and see art from local youth.

The highly anticipated Portland Slavic Festival draws the attention of thousands every year, including community groups outside of the Slavic circle. Planned and prepared by the Slavic Community Center, this event celebrates Slavic heritage in a variety of traditional displays and programs. By uniting the diverse members of the former Soviet Union and showcasing their rich cultural aspects, this exciting event promotes and advocates for the Slavic culture in America, a key factor in easing the assimilation of immigrant communities in the United States. 

The biggest attraction of the event lies in the performances from all nations of the former Soviet Union entertain the crowds with music, dance, acrobatics, fashion and car shows,  in an array of exciting performances. In addition to cultural displays on stage, Slavic cuisine is also an enticing part of the festival. Vendors of all sorts come together to create an exquisite menu that satisfies every craving. From pilaf to crepes, every former U.S.S.R. nation is represented at the Slavic festival, promoting a unified community and attracting diverse groups to the festival every year. 

Besides cultural celebration and entertainment, the Portland Slavic Festival also provides organizations including the Multnomah County Health Department, Adventist Health, Trimet, Portland Park and recreation, and the U.S. Forest Service with community outreach opportunities that are beneficial for both parties. Businesses and organizations are able to share their information and resources with an underrepresented community, widening their circle of influence and creating valuable connections.

In partnership with the Portland Bureau of Transportation, the Slavic Community Center was able to create a Pedestrian Education Seminar was created to inform the Slavic community of recent traffic law changes in the region. Language barriers and lack of access to information prohibit many Slavic citizens from receiving adequate access to crucial information about traffic law changes and safety knowledge, creating a higher possibility for traffic hazards within the community. By creating an event with instruction from Sharon White of PBOT through a series of songs in automotive-themed Russian songs and an active walk through SE Portland, members of the Slavic community were able to learn pedestrian safety and participate in an engaging and informative discourse.

An annual event put on by the Slavic Community Center, the New Year’s Toy Distribution aims to alleviate struggling Slavic families during the holiday season. With the financial support from our sponsors, we are able to acquire gifts to distribute to underprivileged families in time for the holidays. This tradition has been ongoing for 4 years and the number of gift recipients multiplies every year, with recent years allowing us to provide toys to over 350 children. Participating organizations and programs also use this event as an outreach platform, providing information on more assistance programs that are available to families seeking financial relief.

In partnership with the non-profit organization Free Bikes 4 Kidz, the Slavic Community Center was able to provide free bikes to children in need. Participating, underprivileged Slavic families who qualified for the bike distribution received a free bike and helmet on the day of the event. Combined efforts allowed for 60 children to participate, choosing a bicycle and helmet of their choice and receiving proper bike riding safety and instruction before taking it home.
