Our journey with the annual holiday event for kids began in 2016 at the Multnomah Library. Starting modestly, we assembled 60 gifts for children from underserved families with the aid of local partners. Each year marked our growth, expanding our partnerships with more businesses and organizations. In 2017, we moved to a larger venue to serve over 100 kids, and by 2018, we reached out to over 200 children. However, the onset of the pandemic posed new challenges. Despite these hurdles, we persisted in our mission. In 2019, though on a smaller scale, we continued to support children and their families through our partners and volunteers. The Slavic Community Center of NW provided not just presents but also food, PPE, and utility assistance to the most vulnerable families. This year, we carried on this tradition, serving over 150 kids, bringing joy and vital resources to their families.

This initiative, part of the “Gifts for Children from Low-Income Families” program by the Slavic Community Center, continued in 2023. Far from being just a day’s event, it was the result of uncountable hours of dedication and hard work by our volunteers and staff throughout December. Preparing for this event demanded immense effort as volunteers spent numerous hours meticulously selecting and wrapping each gift, ensuring each child felt special. We thoughtfully matched gifts to over 150 children’s individual needs and preferences, demonstrating our community’s commitment to profoundly impacting these young lives.

We owe immense gratitude to our sponsors, whose support was instrumental to our initiative’s success. Their contributions enhanced the festive spirit and were pivotal in bringing together various suppliers, each adding value with their support and services. This collective effort from local businesses, educational institutions, and medical organizations created a supportive and joyful environment for both children and their families.

The time spent wrapping gifts fostered a sense of community and purpose, with volunteers from diverse backgrounds sharing stories and experiences, creating bonds that extended beyond the event. This feeling of community enveloped the event, as families were immersed in an atmosphere of warmth and generosity.

The event itself was dynamic and engaging, featuring stalls and activities from our suppliers that offered more than gifts – they provided essential information and resources to assist families in various life aspects. From educational materials to healthcare information, the range of support was extensive and well-received.

The “Gifts for Children from Low-Income Families” initiative in 2023 was not just an event but a vibrant testament to community spirit, volunteerism, and generosity. It showcased how combined efforts from dedicated individuals and supportive sponsors can significantly impact those in need, especially during the festive season. This initiative brought joy to children and strengthened community bonds, leaving a lasting impression on all involved.

In 2020, prior to the global upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, our organization recognized a vital need in East Portland – enhancing traffic safety education among the Slavic and Eastern European communities. These community members faced significant barriers, including language obstacles and limited access to crucial information about traffic law changes and pedestrian safety. This gap not only left many uninformed but also increased the risk of traffic hazards.

Our proactive partnership with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and the invaluable assistance of Sharon White from PBOT paved the way for tailored educational initiatives. We ventured into the streets of East Portland, engaging directly with the community to demystify traffic and pedestrian laws in a way that was both accessible and impactful.

As our efforts gained momentum, we were thrilled to expand our program. This included hiring a dedicated staff member focused on bridging these disparities. This expansion was bolstered by support from the Oregon Department of Transportation, a testament to the program’s significance and potential.

Our multi-faceted approach included:

• Creating Educational Videos for Kids: In collaboration with the Oregon Department of Transportation, we produced engaging videos tailored for children, focusing on pedestrian safety and traffic laws.
• Translating Educational Materials: We translated a child-friendly coloring book into Ukrainian and Russian, ensuring language inclusivity and broader reach.
• Hosting Workshops: Our team conducted numerous workshops across the region, spreading awareness and education on traffic safety.

This initiative has not only educated children attending local public and private schools but also fostered a safer community environment. With continuous changes and improvements in traffic regulations, the need for such educational programs is more evident than ever.

In the summer of 2023, the Slavic Community Center of Northwest (NW) embarked on a crucial mission in partnership with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA): to provide lifesaving air conditioning units to those most at risk during Portland’s scorching heatwaves. The initiative, focusing on the so-called “heat islands” of Portland, targeted elderly BIPOC community members—a demographic particularly vulnerable to extreme temperatures.

• A Timely Response to a Growing Threat: With 48 air conditioning units generously donated by the OHA, our center sprang into action. Our staff and dedicated volunteers conducted extensive outreach to identify and assist those living in the most heat-affected areas. This week, as we face another intense heatwave, the importance of every single AC unit becomes more pronounced. Our collaborative efforts with state partners underscore our commitment to protect our city’s most susceptible individuals.
• A Community’s Resilience in the Face of Adversity: This isn’t the first time the Slavic Community Center of NW has stood at the forefront of climate resilience. Last year, in a similar partnership with the OHA, we distributed both air conditioners and heaters during the fall season, preparing our community for extreme weather conditions year-round.
• Serving the Unserved: The majority of our beneficiaries are elderly BIPOC community members who, prior to our intervention, did not have access to air conditioning in their homes. By targeting these heat islands, areas in the city that experience significantly higher temperatures due to urban infrastructure and lack of greenery, we’re not just providing temporary relief but also addressing a critical aspect of urban inequality.
• Together We Rise: Our efforts go beyond mere distribution. It’s about building a community that cares, that watches out for its most vulnerable, and that takes proactive steps to mitigate the effects of climate change. This initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when community centers, health authorities, and dedicated volunteers come together for a common cause.
• A Call to Action: We urge everyone in our community to remain vigilant during these heatwaves. Check on your neighbors, especially the elderly and those without air conditioning.
